January 23/24 - Community Service & Babylonian Museum & Friday in Tel Aviv

Thursday afternoon, after community service,  we went to the Babylonian Museum....really the museum of Iraqi Culture...in a small community near Ben Gurion Airport.

I had visited it before and thought it was a hidden gem.  It has changed so much since I was there 5 years ago....probably due to large donations of money from Iraqui Jews now spread over the world. 

The building...inside and out has been completely renovated and there is much more info and displays of Iraqi cultural items from around the world, especially from Shanghai and India....which have large communities of Iraqi Jews....who were probably more comfortable in places where the Jewish people practiced Sephardic customs. 

The part I especially loved last time....the dioramas depicting how Jews in Iraq celebrated the holidays....Sephardic with a bit of Muslim influence...was still there, well integrated into the expanded exhibits, as was the recreation of the bima from the great temple in Bagdad.  The museum is still charming, but I ‘kinda’ liked it better when it was less polished. 

One special part of our visit was the story our guide told us about  her family's departure from Iraq some 16 year ago....taking one suitcase for six people and leaving all else behind in an effort to escape the persecution of Jewish people.....

Yesterday, Friday, was a lazy day......especially beautiful and very warm.  After walking through the Arts and Crafts Fair and the Shuk (very big market)which is crowded and noisy on Fridays....their busy day, I came back to the hotel and debated between going to the beach or sitting on my mechpeset (little balcony) and reading.  I saw lots of people at the beach and several in the water, too....although the part of the sea that I observe from my balcony has no lifeguard and does not permit swimming.  Well, I opted for the ease of sitting on the balcony....as I had already walked about 3 miles.....so I read until I got tired, took a nap and then read a bit more.....it was heavenly....as I was in the sun, warm and cozy and just breathing in as much of this Israeli air as possible.

Looking forward to Israeli dancing on the Tayelet on Saturday.

January 22 (Rabin Center - 'Life in Stills' Documentary - by Rosalie Whitehill

Wednesday, started with more wonderful morning school sessions., and afterwards, the group visited the Rabin Center......a superb museum and educational center....located at the southern end of Tel Aviv University.....where the exhibitsinclude over a hundred videos....which you see if you just stand with your headset in front of the screen.....nothing to turn on or off......and tells the story of Rabin's life....chronologically, along with what was happening in Israel at the time and what was happening in the world at that time (laid out chronologically on the floor)......starts with his assassination and ends with the funeral.....an incredible presentation, and this year we had the best guide ever (I had been here twice before.......and each visit I learn something new and enjoy the place.

Last night was really SPECIAL.....Our speaker was Tamar Tal a documentary film maker and she brought the film she did that won prizes to show to our group.......Life in Stills......which I saw 2 years ago at the Boston Jewish Film Festival.....and loved as much seeing it again.....She is a fairly young woman with a 7 month old baby and we had a terrific Q and A time with her and found out much more about the subjects of the film....a young man and his feisty grandmother.....and when I finish this tome, I am heading out to find the young man as his temporary photo shop is on the way to and from school for me!

Forest Day - January 21

Forest Day - Last Friday we had worked in the JNF forest handing out trees for the community TuBshavat celebration, but today was our day to trim, cut and schlep!  The morning was a little chilly when we left Tel Aviv, but the sun was shining and skies were blue! Neil and Susan made sure we had extra jackets, just in case it was chilly in the forest.  We arrived in Park Canada, a beautiful  JNF Park near Latrun, and found the temperature quite warm - off came one layer of clothing and the shorter sleeve shirts! 
The forester, Edward, gave us a lesson on the safety of the tools we would be using and gave us instructions on how to cut the branches.  Off we went to different trees - olive and carob - and we did quite a job in trimming.  When Edward returned in a couple hours he couldn't believe that we had did all the work and even moved on to another area!  Go CAARI! 
After our picnic lunch, we traveled to Rehovot for a tour of the Ayalon Institute - an secret bullet factory during British Mandate years and War of Independence!
